Francis was Max's pet rat throughout her time in high school. He has been deceased since 2008.

Pre-Apocalypse

West Point, Kentucky

At some point during her freshman year, Max purchased Francis. Since she wasn't allowed to have pets, she kept him a secret from her father. The two grew to be close friends (at least from Max's perspective) and she would take him practically everywhere with her. In her senior year, however, her father Franklin learned of Francis' existence and stomped him to death in front of Max. Unable to cope with the loss of her beloved pet, Max was under the impression that Francis was still alive and kept a dead rat in her front pocket for the past 21 years. Each time the corpse decayed, she would swap it out for a new one.

As of Oppressor (What Remains), Rachel Bevis seems to have finally gotten through to Max. She no longer carries 'Francis' around with her, but still finds it difficult to accept her loss.
