Mary-Ann O'Neil is a survivor of the outbreak in What Remains. She is a trader operating in Monroe County.

Pre-Monroe

Savannah, Georgia

Not much is known about Mary-Ann's time in Savannah, except that she is from the area. It is unknown how she got from Savannah to Fairpoint, but one could assume she traveled with a group. She has not talked about it to much.

Fairpoint, New York

According to Mary-Ann, she ran a shop in Fairpoint for 10 years. It is assumed that during this time period, the CPF was established. Mary-Ann took a dislike for the CPF and her business was, according to her, collapsing under the weight of CPF taxes. It was mentioned that she then liquidated the majority of her shop's stock to get established elsewhere.

It is unknown if Mary-Ann cultivated personal or professional relationships in Fairpoint, but she does however mention that she has contacts within the CPF.

What Remains

Season 1

"Years Gone By"

Mary-Ann arrived in Monroe shorty after the bombing of the food storage. While in a conversation with Cooper Briscoe, she mentions that she suspects the CPF had something to do with the attack.

Mary-Ann then gets settled in Monroe, and sets up shop for the near future.

"Absolution"

While walking to the bar from the market, Mary-Ann comes across a conversation outside, where Job, is discussing with the head scout Avery, about the disappearance of a group of scouts. Mary-Ann offers to hire a search party, but Avery declines.

Mary-Ann sat in the bar conversing with Cooper, Avery, Lynch, and Bob, a new arrival in town, when they discuss her reasons for leaving the CPF, as well as Avery's relationship to Jack. After awhile, Omina enters the bar, asking for Jack. Mary-Ann, not liking where this was headed, told Jack to speak to his mother, then proceeds to tail them to Avery's home. Mary-Ann then loses Jack before she could make it to the gates.

Personality

Mary-Ann is consistently shown to be a shrewd business woman who mostly cares about making money, however, there have been some breaks in her character. While, one could chalk up her wanting to hire a search party as a way to get on the better terms with Monroe leadership, one cannot describe her following of Jack after she learned he was Avery's son.

Mary-Ann alluded to Avery being "a better mother than I could ever be," alluding to Mary-Ann having children. This is further bolstered by her saying in regards to "the talk" as "when I had to do it I" before trailing off and saying "nevermind." This could explain the aforementioned following of Jack when she believed he was in danger, as wanting to protect someone else's child because she couldn't herself.

She also had a dislike for the CPF, referring to their politicians at one point as "greedy dirtbags," at one point.

Relationships

Cooper Briscoe

Mary-Ann and Cooper seem to have taken a quick liking to each other, while still being acquaintances.

Avery Dekker

Mary-Ann seems to like Avery Dekker, or if anything respect her. It might be one of the reasons why she ended up going after Jack.

Jack Summers

Mary-Ann seems to care about Jack, even though there not really an explainable reason why she would. Indeed, she ended up going after him when she thought she was in danger, behavior we have not seen from her before.

Anastasia Hope

Mary-Ann and Anastasia seem to get along.

Omina

Mary-Ann has gone on record of saying that Omina creeps her out, to the point where she flat out does not trust her.

Appearances

Season 1

Mary-Ann mostly wears warm clothing suited for the environment, but on occasion, can be seen wearing business clothing (as in her promo image.) She mostly keeps her hair groomed, however, it is not uncommon for it to become messy, especially if she has been outside for longer periods of time.

Furthermore, Mary-Ann wears a ring on her right ring finger, alluding to it being a wedding ring, meaning that Mary-Ann was likely married at some point in her life.

Trivia

• Mary-Ann says she is from Georgia, however, her accent sounds more Mississippian.
