"...it's too late now. I'll keep doing this, I'll keep trying to convince people I'm this thing I'm pretending to be, because I still don't know any other way, and I'm in way too deep to stop. But I've no idea what I'm doing. I just...I think I'm still just trying to buy time. Just enough time to keep everyone alive and get them to a place so that, when the rot comes out again and I utterly fail everybody, maybe somehow they'll still be okay. I'm not...'determination'. Or...what else was it, a...'beacon in the face of darkness'? God, no. I'm Terry Winters, Coward, Pretender and Dormant Disappointment at best. Disastrous at worst."
Terry Winters to Gerald Bechet.[src]

Theresa Winters, also known as Terry, is a main character and survivor of the outbreak in GWR's What Remains. She is the sixth Minister of Monroe, succeeding Crystal Chen after her disappearance.

Pre-Apocalypse[]

Terry grew up in the suburbs of America, though the exact location of her origin is unknown. When the red eye plague hit, her parents were lost in the first wave and she fled to the countryside.

Post-Apocalypse[]

At the beginning of the red eye plague, Terry lived with her aunt on her farm. When her aunt died, she became a drifter, surviving in the wastelands and occasionally staying at different settlements, always to eventually move on.

Monroe County, New York[]

Terry arrived in Monroe County, New York, in December 2028. She took up work as an assistant butcher in town, working under Constantine Hasapis, eventually taking over the butcher shop when he disappeared. After the departure of Crystal Chen and standing unopposed in the Monroe election, Terry became the sixth and current Minister of Monroe.

Season 1[]

"Years Gone By"[]

Terry's arrival
  • Terry arrived in Monroe from the Barrens, and was welcomed inside by Jack Summers. Scrawny and starved, her cautious distrust of other people was overridden by the promise of food and shelter. Initially planning on staying only a few days, she was taken by the friendliness of the people she met there. Terry met the family of Jack, his adopted brother Elijah Hunt and adopted mother Avery Dekker, Head of Scouts.
  • In order to gain some goodwill and offer her assistance, Terry helped out on a mission to remove red eyes and clear the way to the hospital in the south end of town. Though the mission was a success, Terry was woefully reminded that she badly needed practice fighting, having favored dodging and hiding from the red eyes rather than engaging them. She swung her axe too close to those she was among, and in the end her contribution was minimal.
  • A former supply runner, Terry would do runs for small supplies around the neighborhood. It was during one such run that the Monroe bombings happened, shortly after her arrival to town. Unnerved by the attack, she none the less decided to stay and bide her time.

"Absolution"[]

The Woodsman
  • Terry attended the vote for a new Minister but, having only been in town a short while, didn't feel it was her place to be part of the impromptu election. Seeing as previous Minister Julian Carmichael-Ortiz had died before he could finish her citizenship paperwork, she was deemed not able to cast a vote, a decision she found to be fair. Thus Job was made Minister without her input.
  • In the days following the attack and the establishment of a new government, Terry continued her supply runs. During one such outing into the Barrens, she encountered a threatening man with a rifle who chased and cornered her. Terry escaped by striking him in the head with the blunt of her axe blade. She left him in the snow, unsure if he was alive or dead.
  • Terry returned to Monroe, increasingly convinced that she'd killed the man, either immediately or by dooming him to freeze to death. A devastating thought despite the danger he had posed - though she had downed a few red eyes, she had never before killed a living human being. She distracted herself by putting her efforts into her newly assigned job as assistant to the town butcher, Constantine Hasapis.
  • Terry continued her occasional outings into the Barrens. While investigating a shed, she was suddenly trapped once more - her assailant from before had survived, identifying himself only as "The Woodsman". This time, her attempt at escape failed, and she was drugged and brought to his home in the forests far outside of Monroe. Her leg attached to a heavy metal chain in his shed, Terry was trapped for two days. On the third day, during an unrelenting blizzard, Terry realized she'd have to escape or she'd die of cold. She managed to free the chain from the wall, break the lock and escape into the complete whiteout outside. Stumbling blindly through the snow, chain in her arms, she came upon the waterside by sheer chance and followed it back to town. She was found in one of the abandoned storehouses by a trio of people from Monroe, half frozen to death.
  • A few days later, Terry was able to leave the Monroe clinic - but three fingers on her right hand were lost to frostbite.

"Adaptation"[]

Job's council collapse
  • Terry continued to work in the butcher shop, adapting to her handicap and getting to know Monroe better. The town seemed steeped in tense politics, most of which Terry learned of through Jack and the occasional conversation at the Monroe inn. She learned of the Crows, their strange ways and their belief in spirits and things 'not really there'. Everything about it seemed confusing and unsettling to Terry, who quickly wrote it off as delusion.
  • Despite the rising tension between Monroe and the CPF, Terry began to slowly feel more at home. To Terry, Monroe continued to be a place where she'd encounter new, kind people, many of whom she'd soon call her friends. Sadly, this also meant her first loss of a friend in the settlement. Luke Johanson, one of the people who had saved Terry from dying of cold, sustained a zombie bite and killed himself before the infection could claim him.
  • Through rumors and conversation, Terry had some knowledge of the political plots going on, and knew that a CPF diplomat had been killed - however she didn't know the details or invested much time learning about them. She was content to perform her new duties as well as she could, and help out around her in her own small way. But her mostly carefree days in Monroe were ended when Jack told her of his mother, Avery Dekker's, involvement in the death of the diplomat. Terry had his words confirmed when Avery herself confessed to the active part she had played in the murder of both the diplomat and Brighton member Auren Jacobs - worse yet, she was helped by the Head of Security Marian Castle and Minister Job. Terry learned that it had all been a plot to pit the CPF and a place called Brighton against each other, hoping that both of the powerful factions would take their eyes off of Monroe and allow it to remain independent.
  • Terry was shocked by the news and appalled that Avery and her fellow council members could have done such a thing. From finding Monroe a place of safety striving towards lawful civilization, Terry now began to question everything, unsure whom she could trust. At one point, when she and Texas Battle were randomly questioned by Deputy Lorelei Cross seeking to cast some light on the whole affair, Terry remained silent, knowing much more than she wanted to know but never sharing.
  • All the while, Minister Job became more and more absent. With the government of Monroe unravelling, and talks of fighting imminent, Terry and Texas both seriously considered leaving Monroe behind. She met and spoke with Sepp Junkers who offered to facilitate their departure, and she was almost ready to go. However, she decided she couldn't just up and leave without telling Constantine. As it turned out, her conversation with him changed everything once more - Constantine revealed that he, too, had considered leaving, but that he couldn't leave the people of Monroe behind, and he shared with Terry his belief that the only way to change things for the better was to make them better. He was determined to do what he could to make Monroe the place he believed it could be, by becoming a Head of Monroe. His decision to try for leadership made Terry change her mind, and she vowed then that she would stay in Monroe and support him.
  • Tensions waned back and forth in Monroe. Terry's acquiantance Corey Jackson was turning into a friend she found she could rely on, and was one of the first and few people who the otherwise timid woman would open up to. She helped Terry cope when Jack had to leave Monroe for a while - Avery and Marian had had large bounties placed on their heads by the CPF for their involvement in the murder of their diplomat, and Avery fled Monroe with Jack, while Elijah was nowhere to be found. With Texas' radio, Terry was able to covertly keep in contact with Jack, sharing news and awaiting the day he could return again.

"A Brave New World"[]

The death of Hope
  • Minister Job never returned to his post, and Constantine fulfilled his promise by not only becoming a Head, but the new Minister of Monroe. Senior Ranger Max Rutherford arrived to Monroe shortly after with Henry "Paw" Kingsbury. Their purpose was to maintain peace between Monroe and the CPF. Not too long after, Corey and Max entered into a relationship, and Corey expressed her wish of becoming a CPF Ranger herself. Though a bit uneasy around Max at first, Terry was eventually guided by Corey to get to know Max better, and soon a friendship started between them as well.
  • Terry continued keeping in contact with Jack and having secret conversations about Job's involvement in the death of the diplomat. While Terry never aspired to be a rebel or stir trouble of any sort, she still kept in touch and kept her eyes and ears open for any trouble that might come from that direction, and anything that might be done to help Jack.
  • Terry also worked with Constantine and Texas to produce a device for her mangled hand. Without the use of her right hand, Terry was unable to wield any sort of weapon and therefore woefully defenseless against any threats posed by the outside. To rectify this, the three of them manifactured a hidden switchblade, with the blade detracting back into the palm of her hand when not in use. It worked wonderfully, and Terry was armed and ready for the outside world once more.
  • Around this time, inn-worker Anastasia Hope was jailed on suspicion of attempting to poison Sepp Junkers, who had since been made Head of Security. Though Terry didn't know Hope very well, hearing about her case she felt it to be very strange, and a lot of different opinions were going around regarding whether she was innocent or not. Corey was especially agitated with how Hope's case was proceeding, accusing Constantine and Sepp of having deliberately set her up. It caused a rift between her and Terry, who couldn't believe that Constantine would do such a thing. Hope remained in jail for many days with no trial in sight, and Terry, in lieu of wanting to make Monroe a better and lawful place, was worried. Constatine had left on a hunting trip a few days earlier, and had not returned. So Terry, in a moment of uncharacteristic determination, set off to find him.
  • She did find him, and travelled with him back to Monroe. But it was too late - by the time she and the Minister returned, Hope had hanged herself in her cell. On top of being saddened by her loss, Terry saw the whole event as a big blow against the Monroe she envisioned. Doubts in her and Constantine's shared vision began to creep into her mind again.
  • While Jack and Avery's departure was supposed to be temporary, it now turned into a permanent goodbye. By Marian willingly giving up herself and letting an ally cash her bounty, Avery was able to use that bounty to create new identities and lives for Jack and herself. Terry and Texas had seen Jack in Monroe for the last time.

"Eight Hours"[]

Monsters emerging
  • Terry lay low for the time being, practicing the use of her blade. She had recently gotten to test it for real when she, Corey and Max were attacked by red eyed dogs just outside of Corey and Max's home in the Barrens. They managed to dispose of them together, and while Terry did a good job with her limited weaponry, she emerged from the battle unnerved. It troubled her to know that the red eye plague could produce such monsters - and these were not the first monsters or supernatural events she had heard of in the area. Monroe had seen strange, worm-like creatures in the sewers and attacking livestock, and both Corey and Max told Terry of overwhelming nightmares and hallucinations they both had suffered. Terry, to the frustration of her friends, dismissed their stories, saying that there simply had to be a logical explanation. Right...?
  • The literal monsters weren't the only ones around. Terry had heard tales of the Millers, though without the misfortune of meeting them herself. After a disasterous fight against them, both Corey, Max and Constantine returned with severe injuries. Terry visited them at home and in the Monroe clinic, which she had started supplying with herbal medicine in her time away from the butcher shop. She had also taken over the house that lay conveniently close by.

"The Key"[]

The zombie bite
  • After the disaster that was the last mission against the Millers, when the time came to engage them again, Terry signed up as well. She wasn't keen on fighting anyone, and not planning to either unless forced - her contribution would be rooted in her so-so medical skill and herbal remedies, acting as a medic for those injured.
  • This mission turned out to be a disaster as well, and possibly even more so than the last one. Though there were no casualties, there were plenty of near-fatal injuries, starting with Head of Construction Henry Patton who volunteered to drive a van to the mission location and ran over an IED. The explosion left him severely burned, and Terry stayed behind to tend to his wounds. While seeing him off as he was taken back to their designated safe spot, a red eye snuck up on them. Taken by surprise, Terry turned around and managed to down it with her hand-blade, but was bitten in her upper right arm as a result.
  • Terry stayed by the exploded vehicle, looking after a Miller captive that had been left there, and taking care of her injury as well as she could, all the while knowing this was probably it for her. She was found soon after by Head of Commerce Crystal Chen and Kaari, the tribal woman who had been rescued by the Millers earlier, and whose medical skill far surpassed Terry's. She proved this later on when she amputated Terry's infected arm and saved her from turning.
  • Texas suffered a similar loss during the mission as an explosion nearly claimed his life and took half of his left arm. As they both recovered in the clinic, Terry lamented the terrible luck and bad decision-making that seemed to follow Monroe, and promised the seriously injured Texas that she would take care of him.
Terry's breakdown
  • In the time following the mission, Texas grew increasingly depressed about his injury, to the point where he revealed thoughts of suicide. This weighed on Terry on top of the loss of her arm, and she found little comfort in her work and little sympathy from Constantine, whom she had long since started to lose faith in. A short while later, while talking with Corey during work, Terry broke down entirely.
  • Corey brought Terry out of Monroe and to her own house in the Barrens where Terry slowly gathered herself again. During another conversation between them, Terry revealed to Corey that she believed herself to be pursued by bad karma. That her neglect to help others in the past, and the way she allowed a previous home settlement of hers to turn into a horrific bandit camp, had made her into a rotten person, poisoning every attempt she now made at making things right and doing something helpful for others. At the end of her tale, Corey urged Terry to leave Monroe for a while, to come with her to Pittsford and clear her mind. Terry accepted.
  • Terry tried to convince Texas to join them, but Texas refused. Having just finished creating a personal fortress in the Barrens, he had no desire to leave it, and instead tried to convince Terry to stay at his place. But Terry refused also, saying she would always feel obligated to head back to Monroe if she lived too close by, and that she needed to get away from it all for a while. They said their goodbyes and promised each other to keep in touch and stay safe.

"The Third Door"[]

Outpost 2-15
  • Emerging at the other side of her breakdown, Terry saw a change. Away from Monroe, surrounded by friends and with time to think, Terry began to slowly discover a dawning confidence in herself. Terry was done engaging red eyes up close with a small blade - while she never had or acquired a particular love of guns, Terry started practicing her gunmanship in Pittsford. She wanted to make sure that at her next red eye encounter, she would be ready and preferably at a distance.
  • Terry returned to Monroe County a little over a month later, only to learn what had happened in her absence. Constantine had disappeared, as had Head of Scouts Zed, Head of Security Sepp Junkers and Head of Agriculture Liliana Marat, who fled Monroe and stood accused of stealing important documents. Crystal Chen had stepped up as the new Minister of Monroe, and formed an alliance with the Millers, so far as to allow them an embassy within Monroe. Henry Patton revealed himself and Crystal to be Brighton agents, as he renounced the faction and made an attempt on Crystals life together with leader of the Monroe Rangers Max Stone. The attempt failed, as did a later attempt at turning the people of Monroe against her. In the end, Henry fled Monroe County, and Max Stone fled to CPF outpost 2-15 with his Rangers.
  • Terry found Texas at his fortress again, and was relieved to see that he was doing better. Surprisingly, Crystal arrived at the fortress while Terry was visiting. Terry took the opportunity to ask Crystal about the baffling changes made in Monroe, and Crystal explained that the treaty with the Millers was a neccessity, and that she had found their leader, Carl Miller, to be a gentleman. Knowing Terry was staying at outpost 2-15, Crystal asked her to give her regards to Max Rutherford. As Terry turned homeward, she was more or less convinced that Crystal and Texas shared a relationship deeper than 'just' a friendship.
  • At the outpost, Terry met Recorder, and saw Liliana Marat who had fled to the outpost as well. Shortly into her stay at the outpost, another mission against the Millers was mounted, with both Max Stone and his rangers, the CPF Rangers and the newly established Blackbear Contracting company joint together. This time they were taking the fight to the Miller headquarters. Seeing a chance to help out against the Millers once more, and secretly hoping to help gain favor with the CPF so that they might later assist in taking back Monroe, Terry signed up for the mission.
  • Terry's gun practice in Pittsford was paying off. She proved her mettle at the Miller headquarters, and the mission was largely a success - however, the discoveries they made while there were nightmarish. They encountered Carl Miller himself for the first time, and uncovered a sick cult-like ritual which revealed the frightening power the Millers had acquired. Upon seemingly dying, several of them turned into actual monsters, and the fight continued. Terry herself was grabbed by one such monster, sustaining a deep wound to her abdomen. She managed to continue the fight, and both she and Max survived as the Millers were beaten back, although Terry accidentally stabbed Max in the shoulder right before the fight ended. She felt terrible about it and woved never to use knives in combat again, at the very least not as a throwing weapon. Sadly, Carl Miller had escaped.
  • As the days passed at the outpost, Terry learned more about Crystal's affiliation with Brighton and what that name represented, and understood that Monroe had been more or less completely infiltrated by them. She held out hope that Max Stone, with the support of the outpost Rangers, would take his own Rangers to Monroe and liberate it, throwing both Crystal and the Millers out. However, this never happened - Stone was suddenly taken into custody by the CPF. This tore a fresh hole in Terry's hopes and beliefs, and she couldn't understand why the CPF had decided to imprison Stone. Terry turned to Liliana and shared her worries and her hope that Monroe could still be reclaimed. Liliana in turn revealed that she had not given up on taking back Monroe either, and both hoped to speak with Stone at the earliest convenience. But before they got the chance, Max Stone was executed, causing Liliana to flee the outpost.
Terry's decision
  • Shocked by this turn of events, and saddened that Liliana had left without a word, Terry left the outpost as well. She no longer felt safe there, and couldn't understand why Stone had to die. Terry fled to Texas' fortress, where he allowed her to stay for as long as she wanted. But she felt hopeless and lost - the last of the Monroe leadership was now gone, and without them, the hope of taking back Monroe seemed completely gone as well.
  • Terry spent a lot of her time at Texas' fortress in thought. The logical thing to do would be to give up on Monroe, seeing as there was so little hope to reclaim it. The entire government had been unravelled. The people who hadn't fled Monroe were either fearful, undecided or even condoning Crystal's actions, with no one moving to rise up against her. And, though the Millers were mostly defeated in the Barrens, the ones inside Monroe thrived in their embassy. As far as she knew, there were no Monrovians left to oppose Crystal. No one, except herself.

"Rebirth"[]

Return to Monroe
  • It wasn't without worries that Terry returned to Monroe, and she definitely did not have a ready plan on what to do there, either. She had no idea if Crystal or her allied Millers knew she had taken part in the attack at the Miller headquarters. Additionally, Crystal knew Terry had been staying at the outpost, and could easily brand her a CPF spy. Figuring there was only one way to find out, Terry went inside the security building and met with Preston Hand, Crystal's new Head of Security - the only Head she had instated. Somewhat surprisingly, she was welcomed and assured that her citizenship was still valid, and Preston seemed grateful to greet a returning citizen.
  • The Monroe that Terry returned to was definitely a different one. The traders had left the trade building. Millers walked the streets, and tension between them and the citizens were high. The inn was quiet and there was fear in the air. In the daylight hours, Preston could be heard running drills with his newly formed Peacekeeper taskforce. Terry reclaimed the butcher shop, working while keeping her eyes and ears open for opportunities and information.

Season 2[]

"Questionable Ethics"[]

The candidacy
  • While back at Monroe, Terry thought long and hard on how to best help the town from the inside, mulling over how to convince the people of Monroe that leaving Crystal in power was a terrible and dangerous prospect. Terry knew that Preston Hand was her most adamant supporter, and if she could convince him, she could likely convince everyone. For this reason, Terry decided to pay Preston a visit first.
  • During their conversation, when she learned that Preston, too, did not condone the Millers being in town, she carefully began to share her knowledge of them and what she had experienced at the Miller Headquarters. It was clear that he didn't believe a word of it, and so Terry offered to bring evidence. She remembered that Recorder had been present at the raid as well, taking pictures. Terry got in contact with her right away, and within an hour presented Preston with the photographic evidence of Millers turning into monsters. Preston was shocked - and yet he couldn't believe that Crystal would have had any knowledge it beforehand. He asked Terry of further proof of her involvement with the Millers and Brighton.
  • Terry was in a pickle. Despite the photos, Preston was still firmly allied with Crystal, and Terry's opposition had been made known. Preston might choose to share this information with Crystal at any moment and, given Crystals ties to Brighton and how the Heads had all disappeared, Crystal was likely to find a way to get rid of Terry as well. But then an answer presented itself - seeing as Crystal was never elected Minister, there was a demand for an election to be held, and Terry realized the terrifying but practical truth: if she signed up as a candidate and became a public figure, she would be that much harder to silence. Terry had no desire at all to run for office, nor to sustain a pretend candidacy until she could find enough evidence to naturally overturn Crystal. But she was running out of options. And so, Terry became a Minister candidate, if only to buy more time.
The investigation
  • With the time she'd won, Terry got in contact with Max Rutherford and told her about her return to Monroe and plans to get Crystal out of power. Max agreed to help her, and soon met with Terry to provide her with a batch of forgotten CPF evidence on Brighton - code names, broadcasts, agent interviews and more. Max also told Terry about the bombings in Pittsford, and that Corey was missing, to Terry's great concern.
  • The evidence Max provided was shocking and enlightening. Other than confirming Crystal and Henry's affiliation with Brighton, there was even further disturbing information within. The Brighton alliance with the Millers was mentioned as a deliberate, planned and focused act to keeping Crystal in power, going against Crystal's claim that the alliance was one out of desperation. Even more disturbing, the evidence showed Brighton as having a keen and positive interest in the Millers monster powers and a so-called "Miller drug" that apparently had something to do with their abilities as well.
  • Terry fully believed in the validity of the evidence, but the fact that it came from the CPF was a mark against it - she wasn't sure if Hand or even the people of Monroe would put their faith in it for that reason. She needed more, but feared running out of time. Just then, Recorder contacted her again, saying she had acquired the account of Henry Patton, which confirmed much of the CPF evidence and added even more to the pile. Terry felt she was almost ready to present her case to Preston - at the same time, she felt terribly alone in Monroe, and vulnerable to being silenced and her evidence lost. She needed allies.
  • She was hoping to find one such ally in Texas, but instead, he was furious with her. A friend of Crystal and Terry both, he was stuck worrying for both of them, and heartily against Terry running for Minister. The whole situation caused a rift between them, one that would make itself known every time they talked with each other. Terry had to keep looking for support and, knowing how close Texas still was with Crystal and how much he disapproved of her campaign, she decided to keep the evidence she had collected secret from him.
  • One day, an old acquiantance showed up at the gates of Monroe - Avery Dekker, notably arriving alone. Avery was visibly worn out and asking for any news about her son, Elijah. Terry had no news to give, and instead asked Avery about Jack. She was devastated to learn that Jack had died in the Pittsford bombings. Avery left without entering, fearing that someone might still be looking to cash in her bounty, and deciding instead to stay at a place unknown to Terry. Terry knew she would never really forgive Avery for forcing Jack to leave Monroe, ultimately leading him to his death.
The rebels
  • Shortly after, a fight at the inn escalated and three Millers killed an elderly Monroe citizen before fleeing the scene. Crystal and Terry went to the Miller embassy to confront the Millers. Preston had his peacekeepers surround the building, and Crystal spoke with the Millers over the radio. They refused to surrender the murderers, but offered to leave Monroe. Surprisingly to Terry, Crystal turned towards her and asked what the Minister candidate would do in her place. Terry replied that, since the Millers had already surrendered, there was no need for further bloodshed. Crystal then ordered Preston to kill everyone inside the embassy. A peacekeeper died in the scuffle, and several were injured - but the Millers were now eradicated from Monroe, and the alliance was broken for good.
  • As part of her candidacy duties, Terry was invited to participate in an interview of the radio, hosted by Raymond McCormick. She said yes, mostly to solidify her public figure status and hoping the broadcast might help reach out to any would-be allies still in the Barrens. At this point in time, Terry was slowly realizing that it wouldn't be enough to just remove Crystal from the Minister post. She had to make sure that there was something to maintain the peace afterwards, and keep further corruption at bay - even if it meant becoming the new Minister herself.
  • Shortly after the broadcast, Terry got in contact with none other than Liliana Marat. She had returned to Monroe County, laying low and making sure Crystal had no idea of her presence while, somewhere out there, her own people were still working on uncovering more info on Brighton. Liliana declared her full support of Terry's candidacy and insisted on helping her, not just by gathering more evidence, but by becoming Terry's mentor. Through secret lessons, Liliana showed Terry how to speak and carry herself with confidence, how to debate and, ultimately, how to lead.
  • Soon after, Terry encountered another known face - Kaari, the woman who had amputated her arm, and her bodyguard Gerald Bechet. They were both staying at the Refuge, a self-sustained mine and sanctuary created by Jinichi Tateru, welcoming the Monroe refugees who had fled when the Millers arrived. Terry presented her ideas and her folder of evidence to Kaari and Gerald. The response she received was disheartening - Kaari had no faith in Monroe and no real motivation to help reclaim it, through Terry or anyone else. Gerald was more forthcoming, but echoed Terry's concern that the evidence she had acquired wasn't going to be enough, and that it was far too easy to dispute. He urged Terry to focus not on Crystal's failings, but rather on how Terry, through positive change, could make Monroe a better place. Terry, still with no real confidence that she could win the Minister post on promises and plans rather than the evidence, left the Refuge feeling downcast and unsure of everything.
  • Terry told Liliana about her disheartening meeting with Kaari and Gerald. Liliana suggested they set up a meeting all of them, at the Refuge, to discuss plans and ideas. Terry arranged it, and it became the first of many such meetings - the rebel group had been formed and, with their help, Terry was going to try for the Minister post in earnest.
E'rami
  • The time that followed was a blur of secret meetings, radio conversations, establishing new relations and rekindling old ones. Terry doubled down on her search for support, and it paid off - her campaign was largely met with positivity, and the traders who had left Monroe promised their return if Terry was made Minister. Terry conducted a poll asking the citizens of Monroe of their wishes for the new government and what issues needed more focus, and got a lot of valuable data in return that further strengthened her campaign. Recorder became a part of the rebel group, and made plans of her own to create a new settlement in the abandoned Haven's Point, which would likely, eventually, be an ally of Terry's Monroe. The group visited the North Mines and, after struggling against the red eyes and monster in what would be Terry's first true test of leadership, found them viable for ore processing if they could clear out the rest of the threats. Plans were made on how to expand the trade routes and, at Gerald's suggestion, Bartertown was in Terry's sights as a prospective trade partner as well.
  • Kaari's skill and knowledge with the spirits and monsters in the Barrens became known to Terry. She had already recognized Kaari's abilities with the Trullans in the North Mines, and with the Brighton evidence making mention of monsters and the mysterious and elusive Man in Red, Terry knew there was a great relevancy in knowing more. She knew a little bit about a great monster living in the woods east of Monroe, and learned that Kaari had some kind of understanding with it. If the creature was as docile as advertised, and despite not feeling very comfortable with the prospect of meeting it, Terry concluded it would likely be a good source of information. So when Kaari suggested a meeting between all of them, Terry agreed.
  • Meeting the creature, whom Kaari had named E'rami, was an experience. A great, rotting monster taller than the trees, able to control the red eyes around it, more animal than human, and looking something like a walking nightmare, Terry almost regretted her decision to meet it. Worse, E'rami had no way of speaking, except through Gerald as a reluctant vessel. As unnerving as the meeting was, Terry gained a lot of info. She learned more about the Man in Red, the threat he represented, the Millers' worship of him, and the other monsters in the Barrens. She learned that, even though the Millers were gone from Monroe, people remained in the town that were 'marked' - an invisible mark given by the Man in Red, calling monsters to hunt the marked, and a mark which Kaari herself carried. Ultimately, Terry learned that E'rami and her own goals were aligned - E'rami had no love of the Millers nor the monsters, and seemed to not disapprove of Terry's plan to lead Monroe. At E'rami's wish, Kaari woved to hunt down a monster, known as a dogman, and present its body to E'rami. After the meeting, Terry was filled with new worries and revelations as she helped Kaari get Gerald back to the Refuge to recover from his ordeal.
  • Terry and Gerald would have further correspondences with each other. Terry declared that she wanted to have a second meeting with E'rami, this time with questions prepared, especially on how to possibly remove the marks and eliminate the monster threat before the monsters descended on Monroe. Terry also made it clear that she refused to let Gerald be a vessel again - they would have to find another way. Through their conversations, Gerald became a confidant of Terry's, someone she could always rely on for advice and support in both her campaign and her person.
The dogman disaster
  • Alongside her candidacy work, Terry still worked as a butcher and huntress, helping to feed Monroe while at the same time garnering funds for her campaign. The work was taxing, and at the end of it, she'd spend long nights and mornings writing, planning and obsessing over politics. What little time she had to spare was spent thinking and worrying about E'rami and the monsters encroaching Monroe, and how to possibly fight them off - a problem that wouldn't disappear even if she did make it to Minister. With so many tasks and concerns, Terry was left with little time to sleep, and she grew increasingly more exhausted as a result. When Recorder raised concerns over this, Terry brushed her off, saying this was all a temporary effort, and that sleeplessness wouldn't kill her. Recorder wasn't so sure, and warned Terry that she ought to slow down. But by now, Terry's stress was a habit - she couldn't slow down even if she wanted to.
  • Time passed, and Kaari declared she was ready to fulfil her promise to E'rami and deliver the dogman. Terry offered her assistance in order to help out Kaari and gain favor with E'rami before a second meeting. Terry asked Recorder if she would come along to help as well, and Recorder accepted eagerly, wanting to learn more about the monsters and E'rami herself. The plan was to go to a destroyed trade caravan and use the horse carcasses both as bait to lure out the dogman and as shelter to hide behind.
  • The plan seemed sound - but the execution a disaster, riddled with the worst of luck. Texas Battle stumbled upon the scene, and was quickly made to hide as well. When the monster emerged, rather than just a single dogman, it turned out to be a whole pack - bigger and stronger than anticipated, save for one scrawny runt of a dogman that kept in the back. Almost as soon as they arrived, Gerald, Recorder and Texas all began to act erattically, as though losing their minds. Gerald and Texas were panicking, mumbling about dogmen in the trees and seeing more of them than were really on the scene. In her own hiding spot, Recorder was starting to lose it as well. Terry and Kaari, the only ones unaffected, were baffled until they realized that the dogmen had launched some kind of psychic attack, causing the others to see things. Outnumbered, Kaari left her hiding place and attempted to negotiate with the dogman leader. The two of them conversed, talking in a language Terry couldn't understand. Meanwhile, another dogman was approaching the hiding spot of herself, Gerald and Texas. Having run out of options, Terry left the hiding spot in an attempt to distract the dogmen and support Kaari's efforts. It failed. Soon, the dogman leader was on Kaari, tearing at her, while two dogmen were on Recorder. Terry rushed in between as the third dogman launched itself at Texas. But she was still exhausted, and didn't react fast enough as it grabbed her leg and tore deeply into it. Texas attempted to grab her and drag her out of the dogmans hold, while Gerald was busy shooting at phantom dogmen in the trees behind them.
  • The one-sided fight ended with Kaari dealing a serious wound to the leader of the pack, just as something approached from the forest. E'rami arrived, chasing away the dogmen, and leaving half of the group broken, bleeding and senseless. Unable to carry all of them to the Refuge for aid, Gerald made the devastating choice of ordering Texas to grab Recorder while he himself picked up Terry - leaving Kaari, whom he believed to be dead, behind. They rushed to Haven's Point where the nurse Alexis, with the help of the other Haven's Point residents, began treating Terry and Recorder. Gerald quickly returned to look for Kaari's body, only to find that she was gone.
  • Terry's wounds were severe. The dogman had broken the bone of her lower leg and left her unconscious from bloodloss and feverish with infection. Recorder's injury was even worse. Though she would have eventually recovered from her wounds, her mind never did, and she could speak no sense. A few days after the dogman disaster she just wandered out of Haven's Point, never to be seen again.
  • Terry lay for days with few signs of recovery, until one evening Gerald awoke to an alive Kaari treating Terry's leg with a strange medicine. Gerald was furious that Kaari had let them spend a week thinking she was dead, though Kaari couldn't seem to understand why. But with the help of Kaari's treatment, Terry began to recover, though it wasn't until later that she learned the main ingredient of the medicine - dogman saliva. During this time, a red eye horde made its way to the settlement, and while they were forewarned over the radio and able to evacuate to the Refuge, Haven's Point was completely destroyed.
  • While Terry was recovering in the Refuge clinic, Texas revealed to her that he had found her collection of evidence against Crystal and Brighton. Terry was horrified - she didn't know what Texas was going to do with this information, and urged him to not tell anyone. Texas, in turn, was alarmed that Terry could think he would go behind her back and do that. He once again admonished her for risking her life for what he believed to be a lost cause, resulting in a great shouting match between them. When the anger between them abated, Texas told Terry that he wouldn't ever approve of what she was doing - but he wouldn't try to stop her anymore, either.
The plan
  • About a month after the dogman fight, Terry returned to Monroe along with Alexis. Though still on crutches, Terry's leg was healing at an incredible rate due to Kaari's cyanophage medicine. With the help of Gerald, who had made contact with the Amish Nation after saving one of their caravans from bandits, Terry set up a meeting with them to establish a new trade relation. The meeting was a success, but Terry was downcast - the disappearance and presumed death of Recorder weighed on her conscience, and her injury made her feel meek.
  • Through Kaari, Terry got to know John Smith, a Crow who seemed not all there. A man knowledgeable about the monsters and their history, Terry struggled to understand his strange way of words. But with the help of Kaari she managed to parse some of it, adding to her information on the subject. At Gerald's recommendation, Terry also contacted Alfred, an elderly guard in Monroe, and asked if he would help her as she resumed her hunting and butcher work while still recovering from her injury. A supporter of her campaign, Alfred accepted readily and soon became more of a personal bodyguard than an assistant to her.
  • Terry's injury and recovery had set her back time-wise - she was more or less convinced that Preston had informed Crystal at this point. With Texas now also in the know, Terry couldn't wait any longer - she had to reveal her information to Monroe as well, and finally take an offensive stance in the election. Her plan was clear: She had to set up a meeting with Preston, try to convince him to drop his support of Crystal, and even join her side if possible. Regardless of her success, she would then hold a speech to the people of Monroe, laying all the evidence bare and openly announce her vision for a new, better Monroe without Crystal in charge. Finally, with everything revealed, she would meet Crystal toe-to-toe in a live radio debate hosted by McCormick. Everything was almost ready. There was just one more thing left to do.
  • Terry knocked on the door of Anthony Wilson, and elderly Monroe resident. When the election was announced, he had declared his own candidacy, making him the third candidate and another opponent of Terry's and Crystal's. But there was something strange about his candidacy - during the time the election had gone on for, Anthony had not been very proactive nor very vocal. He had hardly seemed focused on garnering any support at all, his efforts mainly focused on volunteer work in the soup kitchen. At their meeting, Terry proposed that Anthony join her campaign and become her advisor. Anthony accepted almost immediately, revealing that he had never intended to hold the Minister post for long if he won, and mostly sought to divide the vote away from Crystal. He told Terry that he had a lot of sway with the old folks in town, and that he would declare his support during the radio debate. Thus Terry gained yet another important supporter, and the road was clear - she could now start her plan.

"Oppressor"[]

The crevice
  • Terry was making her last preperations, making sure everything was ready for the final push towards Ministership. Her stress was mounting again, and the excitement and anxiety was real. However, despite her continued focus on the Monroe election, Terry couldn't escape the increasing and insistent feeling that Crystal and Brighton were merely a symptom of a greater disease, just another party interested in the greater threat - The Man in Red. Terry was slowly but surely becoming convinced that winning Monroe was not the end goal, but a step on the path of becoming able to defeat him. And yet she still knew so little about him. A cult called the Disciples of Lazarus. The marks. The monsters. A bunker at an undisclosed location. Terry lamented to Liliana that trying to maintain all the threads was becoming too difficult and that, if the true goal really was to defeat the Man in Red, her information was still much too vague to be any real use.
  • During an update exchange near the Refuge, Terry and Gerald discovered Kaari sneaking into a crevice in the stone wall. Worried what she might be getting into, Gerald opted to follow her, with Terry following close behind. Deep within the cave they found a room filled with ritualistic carvings. In the middle of it all was Kaari, seemingly in some kind of trance, and when they approached her, she fell into a fit of seizure. After helplessly waiting for Kaari's fit to subside with no change in sight, Terry made the decision to carry her out of the cave and get her medical attention. While they were making their way out, a strange and freezing cold followed Kaari, and they heard a metallic and unnatural noise behind them, convincing Terry that something was following them. Just as they made it out, Kaari woke up and vomitted black goo all over herself and Terry. Both Gerald and Terry were startled to find that not only was Kaari okay, apparently the whole ritual was Kaari's attempt at solving Terry's problem with lacking concrete information about the Man in Red. She had been succesful - in her vision, she had travelled to the location of the bunker, and brought back the name of the place: Nunavut, Canada, and a word: EPSILON. More importantly - she had learned that the bunker contained a weapon that could destroy The Man in Red.
  • In a radio conversation with Max, Terry learned that she too knew about the bunker in Canada. Max had learned this information from the ICLF group, who too were interested in what the bunker contained - along with Brighton and the CPF. Seemed everyone was gunning for this place, but to what purpose? Max revealed that she and her rangers were planning a mission to Canada, not to obtain the weapon, but to destroy it, to make sure no one else could use it. Terry was alarmed by this and, despite worrying who might be listening in, immediately told Max that she mustn't destroy the weapon, as it might be their only chance of defeating the Man in Red. Max, too, was surprised to learn that Terry knew about this. Knowing the risk of sharing their intelligence over the radio, they agreed to share everything they knew with each other when they would meet again - and hopefully soon.
Crystal's departure
  • A few days before the radio debate, Terry finally had her meeting with Preston. The Blackbear Contracting company had been kind enough to let Terry rent a neutral grounds meeting room for them to have the meeting at. Other than herself, Preston, Gerald, Alfred and a couple of Preston's peacekeepers, Liliana was present as well - though only as a listener, utilizing a walkie talkie hidden in Gerald's pocket. The meeting went on for a long time as Terry presented her case. Bit by bit she revealed the new evidence and tore into Crystal's credibility, with no word from the security leader. When Preston finally spoke, it was clear that the evidence had caused him to further doubt Crystal. Yet it still wasn't enough for him to take away his support of her, nor offer it to Terry. Frustrated, Terry accused Preston of hiding and refusing to face the facts. Preston left the meeting promising to cast his vote in favor of Monroe.
  • Though the end result wasn't exactly what Terry had hoped, Terry's meeting with Preston was over and the plan was now officially in motion. Terry then held her first public speech, revealing the existence of the evidence she had collected against Crystal to all of the town, and adamantly campaigning for a better Monroe with everything she and her supporters had achieved - every new alliance, every new resource, every new initiative. Her speech went over well and, despite the dangerous information she had just shared, Terry felt a great burden lift from her shoulders. Finally there was no need to hide what she had found any longer.
  • A radio van rolled into Monroe and Terry met Raymond McCormick again as he and his assistant set up inside the trading house for the radio debate. Terry was as ready as she was going to be, but strangely Crystal was absent. She continued to be absent all throughout the 'debate', which ended up being another interview for Terry. Later at the inn, Terry, Gerald and Alfred celebrated the strange but lucky break. Terry wasn't feeling very celebratory, though - this was not at all what she had imagined, and it was throwing her off. Why had Crystal skipped the debate?
  • Around this time, Kaari, Gerald, Alfred and Terry set off to set another plan in motion - finally procuring a dogman body for E'rami. In the time that had passed since the last fight, Kaari had developed another medicine from her dogman saliva sample, giving immunity to the hallucination attacks that had taken them by surprise the last time. Kaari and Terry went off to scout the chosen area, a house down the road from a store house and surrounded by forest, where they encountered a lone dogman. Staying hidden, Terry waited for Kaari to initiate the attack. But, to Terry's confusion, Kaari hesitated. Just as Terry was about to ask her what was going on, Kaari did attack and defeat the dogman. They could hear the other dogmen approach, and rushed with the dogman body back to the two men, with whom they quickly drove off. To Terry's horror, the dogman was still alive. As it turned out, Kaari couldn't bring herself to kill it, and instead merely wounded it.
  • Kaari kept the dogman, whom she dubbed Aa'tiami, at the Refuge clinic where she fixed it up. A runt of its kind, Kaari had even helped strengthen it by providing it with more efficient claws. Terry took Kaari aside, not wasting any time letting her know how terrible of an idea she thought this was, and how vehemently she was against keeping a dogman as a pet. But Kaari insisted the dogman could help them. However, while Terry reluctantly agreed to try and plan around this new development, it took a bit more to convince E'rami, who was furious that they had let a dogman live and even brought it into his territory. Terry apologized to stem his anger, while Kaari eventually convinced E'rami that the dogman could be of use.
  • A short while later, Preston Hand asked for Terry to meet with him. During their meeting, a visibly shaken Preston told Terry that Crystal had left Monroe entirely. Her offices and private rooms had been emptied, and she had been seen leaving with an entourage of a few people - effectively leaving Terry the last candidate standing. At this point, Preston finally offered what Terry had been hoping for - his full support of her campaign. Rather than being elated, Terry was suspicious. She questioned if Preston would have arrived at the same conclusion had Crystal still been in the running. Preston responded by showing her a document dated a few days before Crystal's departure. It was the draft of a public address in which Preston would announce his support to Terry, and it convinced her that he was being sincere.
  • Soon after her meeting with Preston, Terry visited Texas in his fortress. Though Terry didn't know if he had already heard the news, and wanted to make sure he was doing alright in case he had, she also wondered if Texas could shed some light on Crystal's sudden departure. As it turned out, he could. She had left her cat in his care, as well as a note apologizing for her sudden disappearance and thanking him for their time together. Texas blamed Terry for Crystal leaving, referring to her candidacy and claiming she finally got what she wanted. However, he soon withdrew his words when Terry started blaming herself for the situation entirely, saying that if she hadn't left for Pittsford, things would have been different. After talking back and forth for a while, Texas revealed a final bit of Crystal's note that he didn't seem to understand, but that Terry, half-horrified, interpreted as Crystal being pregnant with Texas' child, and that this was part of her reason for leaving. She did not share her suspicion with him.
The shield in the field
  • With Crystals departure, the general mood around the election changed, as did Terry's demeanor. More than anything, Crystal's absense filled Terry with a sense of strangeness and uncertainty, coupled with many questions. Had Crystal returned to Brighton? Was she planning on some kind of retaliation? Did she just want to be left alone with her presumed child? What could be expected, and how could Terry best prepare? However, as time passed and nothing happened, and despite all these questions on her mind, Terry gradually felt herself becoming less stressed and more clear-headed.
  • During one of their regular radio conversations, Max asked Terry if she would check on outpost 2-15 which had fallen silent for a while. Terry accepted. It turned out the outpost was okay, but their radio was in disrepair. As Terry waited to talk with Tyrel Mason, the temporary leader of the outpost, a shocking face revealed itself. Elijah, who had been gone for months, approached Terry and her following half-covered in blood and with a baby in his arms. In the time that had passed since Terry last saw him, Elijah had been under heavy suspicion of being linked with the Millers and brutally murdering a woman named Emma Reid, so this was far from an encouraging sight. As they talked, Elijah admitted to the murder without remorse, saying he did it to protect his family as well as Terry, all of who would've been targetted otherwise. He claimed the Millers tortured him, but more or less declared himself a member of the clan and cult, confirming his alliance to them and the Man in Red. Terry was furious that he'd suggest he'd done her a favor by murdering an innocent woman. The people at the outpost, called over by the commotion, apprehended Elijah who willingly gave up the baby and let them take him to their jail. But before handing the child over, he whispered something to her, causing her to be unnaturally quiet, making Terry and her group suspect some kind of supernatural effect. While at the outpost, Terry and her people agreed to help beating back a group of cannibal clansmen that had been endangering the outpost for a while. Terry was called back to Monroe and could not join, but the fight was succesful, and the outpost was grateful for the help.
  • A note was left in the Refuge by John Smith, detailing that he had left gifts out for Terry and Gerald in a disclosed location. Finding it strange but curious, the two of them went to check it, together with Bow, a girl who had been rescued during the fight against the cannibals. In an abandoned field they uncovered the gifts - a pair of arm-guards for Gerald, specifically made to defend against creatures like the dogmen, and for Terry, a beautiful shield of wood and bone carved with the image of Monroe. As they were about to return home, Kaari revealed herself with her dogman ally close behind. They had apparently been doing some hunting together, and Kaari announced that they had discovered the den of the dogmen - the abandoned house where Aa'tiami was found - and were ready to take the fight to them, though hoping they could get some help from the Peacekeepers.
  • In the following days in Monroe, Terry and Kaari would get into several arguments regarding the merits and dangers of keeping a dogman as a pet, as well as how to handle the approaching fight against the dogman pack. From the black goo Kaari had 'brought back' from her vision journey, Kaari had created a poison effective against the dogmen. Kaari's plan was for all of them to take on the dogmen with the help of the poison, and then let Aa'tiami kill the pack leader, thus becoming the leader himself. Immediately, Kaari would challenge Aa'tiami for the right of leadership. If she won, not only would they have succesfully secured a dogman body for E'rami, she would effectively be in control of the dogmen in the area. Terry took umbridge to the consequences of failure, in which case Kaari would become a dogman slave, if she wasn't outright killed first. Eventually, Terry delivered her ultimatum - she would allow Kaari's plan to go ahead if, and only if, she could get Gerald's approval first.
Minister of Monroe
  • Terry spent several days waiting on Preston to announce an emergency election, a formality more than anything seeing as Terry was the only candidate left. With no further word from him since their last meeting, Terry was beginning to get nervous. Had he gone back on his promise and decided to keep the Minister post for himself?
  • But then, a day before New Years, it happened. Preston called for a town gathering in the meeting hall. The room was packed. Once everyone was in place and listening, Preston explained the situation to the gathering and then asked if there were anyone opposed to Terry taking the Minister post. No one objected, and so Terry found herself speaking once again in front of the entire town, but this time as their newly appointed leader. Her words were of thanks, of incredible gratitude at their support and bravery, and of her hopes and great expectations for the future of their community. Terry had become Minister of Monroe.
The death of Corey
  • Terry barely had time to celebrate her succes when she received a devestating call from Max. On New Years Eve, Corey had died. She and Max had made up and been back together for a full 10 minutes when Corey suddenly and violently lost her mind. She ranted about making a deal with the Man in Red, saying that now she and Max would be happy forever. Then she completely turned on Max, lashing out like never before. Finally, she took a gun and pointed it first at Max, then at her own head, and fired.
  • Terry was shocked and broken by the news. Later that same day she went to Texas' place to let him know, and both of them grieved together. Terry displayed uncharacteristic certainty as she declared to him her promise - she was going to kill the Man in Red.

"The Long Dark (part 1)"[]

First days as Minister
  • Corey's death caused a greater concern in Terry, beyond the grief associated with it. If Max's recollection of the event was true, then it proved the Man in Red was able to, in some form or another, kill those he had marked. For this reason, Terry went to Kaari, the only other person she knew for sure was marked as well, and warned her and Gerald of what had happened. Terry added that she intended to double up on her search for a way to remove the marks.
  • Before she left, Kaari had reminded Terry of a man that had recently been admitted to the clinic, suffering from several arrow wounds. A few days later, Terry visited the man to hear what had transpired. She recognized him as Levi Black, a man she had met over at the inn some time ago, who claimed to be some kind of mercenary for hire. As Terry suspected, Levi had been ambushed by cannibal clansmen, known for their primitive nature and weaponry, who totalled his car. But that wasn't all - before getting rescued by two people, 'Jack' Jones and a woman named Trinidad, Levi saw a monster that he described as possibly red eye in origin, and as big as an 18-wheeler, tearing up the road as it went. Sadly he didn't get a good look at it, and Terry left wondering what this new creature could be.
  • Fulfilling one of her main campaign points, Terry quickly announced the mini-election of the new Heads of Monroe. As it turned out, all applicants were unopposed, and so no voting was required. Terry reflected that the lack of candidates was probably due to people being nervous about the dangers of government affiliation, given Monroe's history. She couldn't really blame them for that. In the end, the lineup was mostly predictable and exactly what Terry had hoped for. Preston, Liliana, Gerald and Kaari all joined her new council, with the only fresh face a man named Larry Thorn, who was a newcomer yet seemed very knowledgeable about crops and agriculture.
The crevice, part 2
  • In another effort to find a way to remove the marks, Terry allied with Kaari to go back to the crevice and enter the vision-state she and Gerald had found Kaari in the last time. Kaari was determined to go back, and confident that she could bring Terry along. While knowingly going against her better judgement, Terry recalled how Kaari had succesfully retrieved information through the visions before, and figured this might be the only way to learn how to remove Kaari's mark. For safety, Terry asked Alfred and Alexis to join, tasking them with pulling herself and Kaari out of the cave in case things went south. Gerald was notably absent - Terry had not told him about the whole affair.
  • The ritual didn't go as expected. Instead of just pulling Kaari and Terry into the vision, Alfred and Alexis were pulled along as well. The four of them explored a dreamscape that turned even stranger when Kaari suddenly had her long hair back, and Terry found she had a right arm. This revelation was made no less shocking by the addtional discovery of a most unwelcome presence - the Man in Red. The four watched him kill a man by way of bug-swarm, after which he turned towards them, and they knew they were found. However, he did not attack. Kaari approached him, with the others close behind, and a strange conversation ensued. When confronted by Terry, The Man in Red readily admitted to his part in Corey's death. He told them how both Kaari and Terry were very close to understanding his part of reality, and how he envisioned an evolved world, a world he called a 'natural world'. Shortly after, within the blink of an eye, he disappeared.
  • Terry found herself surprisingly less anxious about the sudden meeting than she would have expected to be. The fury at Corey's now confirmed murderer was too great. But there was more to do. Kaari intended to 'speak with the ocean' and Terry still needed to learn if the marks could be removed somehow. But Alfred and Alexis were done. They had and wanted no place in the vision, and so Terry asked for Kaari to send them away, which she supposedly did, holding her hand towards them in concentration, after which they disappeared. Alone now, Kaari jumped off the cliff they were standing on into the waters below. Terry followed.
  • Deep below the water, Terry and Kaari encountered a leviathan of a monster, a huge tentacled creature that spoke directly and painfully to their minds. It spoke of itself as 'we', and demanded that Kaari delivered 'what he seeks' to it. When asked about the marks, it claimed that it could remove Kaari's, then immediately wrapped itself painfully around her hand and arm and protruded a mouth-like pharynx towards her. Terry, fearing the monster was attempting to devour her, rushed to shield her. But Kaari rejected the attempt, flinging her arm out towards Terry in a desperate attempt to push her away. It worked, though not as expected - Terry was flung backwards and into the void by a great underwater wave.
  • With Kaari's attempt to stop her, Terry found herself losing her hard-won footing on the sandy ocean floor as well as in the vision itself. Suddenly she was armless and floating in the Ontario River. As it happened, Alexis and Alfred were already there as well, observing from the surface, and Alfred dragged a half-drowned Terry to shore - somewhere close to Outpost 2-15 and the river shack nearby. Kaari emerged a few moments later, swimming to shore and removing her drenched clothes to avoid freezing. Her arm hung limp and injured at her side. All four retreated to the shack in order to warm up and avoid hypothermia, with Kaari running to fetch some dry clothes from the Refuge for them all.
  • Safely inside and warming up by a fire, Alfred interrogated Kaari and Terry on what had just happened. He let them know his great disapproval, as well as his desire to inform Preston Hand about the whole thing. His promise to keep quiet prevented him, but he warned Terry that there would be no silence from him if anything like this was to happen again.
The dogmen battle
  • The time had come to take on the dogman pack once again, and hopefully for the last time. Kaari had discovered the location of the pack - apparently they were using the house where Aa'tiami was found as their den. Somehow she had also managed to get Gerald to agree to her plan of fighting Aa'tiami for leadership. Preston was joining to help along with his peacekeepers, but paused when he discovered that Terry intended to help as well. He objected, saying Terry's obligation was to stay in Monroe and stay alive. Terry argued that she had experience fighting the dogmen, and that they needed all the capable people they could get. Preston eventually, reluctantly, conceded on the grounds that Terry would stay in the back and under the protection of the peacekeepers.
  • The fight itself was long, hard and, thankfully, a success. The dogman pack was disposed of, as was their leader. Kaari fulfilled her part when she challenged a surprise Aa'tiami to the leadership fight as intended, and though the fight itself was harrowing, taking everyting for Terry not to intervene, Kaari won. However, she didn't escape a serious injury to her shoulder and arm.
  • After the fight, Terry met again with the crow John Smith, whom she hadn't had a chance to thank for the gift of the shield yet. The shield had served her well in the battle against the dogmen too, and she was grateful to finally be able to show her appreciation. John Smith's reaction was further surprising. Not only did he accept her thanks but, in a somewhat ceremonious moment, pledged his allegiance to her on behalf of the Crow in the area, and told her that she if she were ever in need, she had friends unseen.
Outpost tensions
  • On top of Terry's other worries, she hadn't forgotten about Elijah either. Still imprisoned, she encountered both him and Avery at the outpost jail, Avery as a visitor as she had somehow caught wind of his capture. Elijah's demeanor had changed - he claimed that he had been drugged that day he arrived with the child, and that he couldn't remember anything he had said. Terry was confused and sceptical. But her interview was cut short when Tyrell Mason returned. Apparently he hadn't given his permission for this meeting, and he was furious Terry had been allowed to see their prisoner. Terry and Tyrell talked for a while after - they both expressed a want to mend the bad history between Monroe and the CPF, and the hopes that their changed leaderships would denote this change as well. Upon requesting that Elijah be transferred to Monroe, Tyrell explained that it was out of his hands, and that she needed to see Max about it.
  • Max had finally returned to Monroe County. However wonderful it was to see each other again, the reunion between her and Terry was marred by the passing of Corey, and both expressed their grief to each other. Terry was saddened to see Max so understandably affected, constantly fighting to keep it together even as they just sat and talked. She opted to wait with mentioning Elijahs case and the Man in Red business, for now.
  • With the fight against the dogmen finally over with, Preston requested a talk with Terry. He re-affirmed his belief that the Minister ought to stay in Monroe and let he and the others do the fighting - that the time of Ministers charging into battle had to be over, seeing how risky it was and how badly leadership was needed now in Monroe. Terry argued that times would require all capable hands on deck, and that she knew how to handle herself in the wilds. But Preston persisted, saying there were other, trained people in town who could handle that. It was then Terry began to broach the topic of the monsters with Preston, as well as the Man in Red, asking him what he truly knew about these threats. As Terry expected, beyond myths and rumors it wasn't much, and he was understandably sceptical about the whole thing. But before she could properly explain what she knew and why it was important that he know as well, an electrician named Michael Kaneswell entered. He had come to Monroe, just in time for Terry to make good on her promise to help the outpost fix their radio. Terry postponed the rest of her explanation.
  • Terry, Gerald, Kaari and Preston went with Michael to meet Max and fix the radio as intended. However, once at the outpost, tensions arose. Leaving briefly with Michael to find a missing electronic part in Monroe, Terry returned to see Winton and Preston engaged in a heated argument, insults flying back and forth. Terry was stunned to see Preston engaged in such, and disappointed that a very inebriated Max did nothing but laugh at the whole thing. Terry had to order Preston to back off several times, until she finally told him to go wait in the car, which he begrudgingly did.
  • The radio was fixed just in time for a distress call to come through. Terry decided to follow the call, with Max agreeing to bring her own people with to investigate the matter. Terry fetched Preston saying they needed help for this task. Preston was very against it, but followed along all the same. Outside the outpost, the group searched for the origin of the distress call - and were ambushed by cannibal clansmen. The fight that followed was a mess. Max was shot in the chest with an arrow, which utterly enraged her. Preston demanded that Terry order them to fall back, to which she hesitated, until she called for Max to do the same. But Max ignored her, causing Terry further alarm. Her people were in danger, they were taken by surprise, and she had no idea what to do about Max refusing to move. Eventually she ordered her people to fall back, knowing that meant leaving Max behind as well. But it was already too late. The fight was well underway, and they had no choice but to stay and end it. Thankfully, they managed to get the upper hand and kill every attacker. Preston got caught up beating a man to death with his bare hands, and he emerged from the battle in shock.
  • Back in Monroe, Preston and Terry stayed behind in the car to talk. A remorseful Terry promised Preston to do as he had commanded - not engage in senseless fights or play a hero, and to stay behind, letting others do the fighting for her. However, she in turn demanded that he not engage in arguments like the one with Winston. Preston agreed to do his best.
  • Shortly after, Terry visited Max and confronted her about her recklessness on the battlefield. Max would hear none of it, and accused Terry of blaming her unfairly. Terry voiced her worry that, if they were all going to Canada, she couldn't trust Max to work with them as a team. Terry urged Max that they had to go in as prepared as possible, if they wanted to have any chance against the Man in Red. She followed up by recounting her entire journey towards becoming a Minister, including everything she had learned about the Man in Red, underlining Kaari's capabilities and the importance of her presence in the fight they were facing. Max agreed that they needed Kaari and needed to work as a team, but only if Terry's people were willing to do the same - otherwise they intended to go in alone. Terry ditto'd that statement, and left the outpost feeling dejected.
The council of Heads
  • At the first council meeting, the newly appointed Monroe Heads were given their delegated tasks, and Terry's plans for a better Monroe were officially underway. Terry once again explained the threat of the Man in Red, this time mainly for the benefit of Preston and Anthony, both of whom were still mostly in the dark. The concerns about going to Canada were many - beyond the fact that none of them knew what to actually expect while there, they had neither the supplies nor the manpower to sustain such a trip without seriously draining Monroe. When Terry voiced her own concerns regarding with Max and the possibility of going alone, it was agreed that they would need the support of the outpost for the trip to have any chance of being feasible at all. Terry left the meeting knowing that she and Max would have to work things out somehow.
  • Terry met Max on a regular basis, and her next visits were much more productive. At one of their meetings, Terry requested that Elijah be handed over to Monroe. Max said she couldn't do that - Elijah was a captive of the CPF under suspicion of being a Miller associate. It would be up to the Rangers leader Jack Bevis if Elijah should be delivered to Monroe or not. Terry learned that Liliana had asked to see Elijah as well, which confused her - what business did Liliana have with him? She confronted Liliana about it at the inn, and asked her to leave the case to her. Liliana conceded, saying that she would merely go to Pittsford to check up on an acquiantance of hers, something Terry interpreted to be related to Lilianas secret anti-Brighton spy work, which Terry still knew only little about. When Liliana's methods were discussed, there was a clear rift between her and Terry. Terry was adamant that Liliana and her agents would not be killing or torturing, only harming in self defense. Liliana argued that this would bring her and her people in too much danger while doing their work. Terry insisted, saying that Monroe could not be associated with those kinds of methods in any way. Liliana urged Terry to reconsider, and when she refused, stood up and sadly announced that she would be leaving Monroe. Shocked, Terry begged her not to, but the decision had been made. Liliana would continue her work against Brighton, but without the Monroe association, a better solution for all in her mind. The next day she was gone.
  • Terry was distraught by Liliana's departure. She had barely been a Minister for two months, and already her first Head had up and left. While part of her understood Liliana's reasoning, it still both angered and disappointed her, and the suddenness with which it happened left its mark as well. On top of it all, Terry finally gained access to the Monroe treasury, only to discover that it had been drained nearly dry. She highly suspected Crystal to be the culprit - after all, who else would have the cause and the means to do such a thing? Terry left the remains of her campaign funds in the treasury, but it was clear that the need to get Monroe's trades going had just become much more immediate - and now Monroe was short a Head of Commerce. Monroe's financial future was in jeopardy, as was the trip to Canada. Terry would have to think of something, and soon.
Rules, risks and confessions
  • While visiting the outpost, Max told Terry about Rhea - an old friend of Max's, a night club owner and former leader of the Liberty district in Pittsford. Max confided that Rhea had recently been overthrown by a man named Robbie, who had taken over the district and her night club and forced her to flee for her life. Now a fugitive, Rhea was looking to reclaim her leadership and needed people to help her do so. Max had signed up, and asked Terry if she might count on her help as well. She assured Terry that Rhea would be able to help them substantially in Canada and against the Man in Red. Terry was conflicted. With the Monroe treasury depleted, she was ready to pursue almost any viable avenue to secure resources for the Canada trip. At the same time, she knew that getting involved in a Pittsford conflict could get her and, by extension, all of Monroe intro trouble with the CPF, not to mention it would be breaking her promise to Preston Hand. But in the end the promise of resources - and the ability to help secure Max's safety as well - lead Terry to agree to help, which she confirmed to Rhea when Max had them introduced to each other a short time later.
  • Back in Monroe a peacekeeper named Aiden had been notably absent from his duties. Terry, Kaari and Gerald went to check on him, and discovered that he had been having withdrawals from medication given to him by Harlan Parati - a Miller doctor, once working in the clinic under Crystal's leadership who had been jailed after the embassy was stormed. The medication, which was supposed to help his sleeplessness, PTSD and depression, had caused him to lose memory of the last few days after he mixed them with alcohol. In the days following, Terry and Kaari learned the cause of Aiden's depression - the death of his father and brother at the hands of the Millers - and that he was packed and planning to head to an old Miller base in Vermont, the site of their killing, to find some peace. Terry adviced strongly against it, but Kaari offered to help, causing Terry to reluctantly suggest they bring some peacekeepers with them for added safety - provided Preston Hand saw fit to grant it.
  • Later, back at the outpost, Terry learned from an injured Max that she and her rangers had been sent on a failed mission to rescue a high-value target - the Head Councillor of Pittsford, Anton Korshunov. Their failure meant that the councillor was still kidnapped, and the CPF were mounting a new mission for the rangers to retry the rescue. From Max's retelling, one very worrysome fact stuck with Terry as she left the outpost - the kidnappers were operatives from Brighton, whom Terry now knew were still around, and active.
  • Terry decided the time had come to tell Gerald, whom she had recently named her second in command, about the dreamwalking trip she and Kaari had undertaken. She told him how they had met the man in red, and how Alfred and Alexis had been accidentally dragged with them. She left out the part with the giant underwater leech monster, though. Gerald was angry - furious. He didn't accept Terry's explanation, that she was worried he'd convince her not to go through with it if she had told him beforehand. Gerald told Terry she either didn't believe in him, or believed in their plan to go on this vision quest. Terry acknowledged that it might have been a lack of faith that kept her from telling him - but that it was neither in him nor Kaari.
  • In lieu of her recent conversation with Gerald, Terry soon made the decision to tell him about her agreement with Rhea as well, rather than keep it secret. His counsel was clear - if Terry decided to go ahead with it, she would have to prepare for consequences that would undoubtably be dire, not just for her but for Monroe as a whole. Terry had so far been willing to gamble and face the consequences, whatever they may be. But the more she thought about it, the more she realized the reward was not worth the risk. What if Rhea's people, the main resource she had promised in return for Terry and Max's help, decided to turn on all of them in Canada? What if they wanted the weapon for themselves? Terry's good intentions could very well turn an already bad situation into something even worse, even in a winning scenario. It didn't add up. Cursing her own indecisiveness and lack of foresight, she made the difficult decision of going back on her promise to Rhea.
In search of a Crow Mother
  • Max was understanding towards Terry taking back her promise to help, not blaming her for putting Monroe and her ministership first. Knowing Monroe was still stuck with a resource problem, Terry shared another plan with Max - she intended to reach out to the Crow Mother, and try and convince her to support their trip to Canada. Terry knew the chance of finding the Crow Mother and her camp was small, but if she could provide any resources or even just information, it would be worth the attempt. John Smith's surprising and overwhelming support gave Terry hope that she really did have friends unseen, and that she'd be able to count on their aid in this matter. Max, who had met with the Crow Mother once before, wanted to help but couldn't recall the location of the Crow camp, nor did she hold out much hope that tracking down her own Crow contact, Blackwell, would be an easy task. They agreed to each try and get a hold of their Crow contacts, and keep each other updated.
  • Terry arranged for her and Kaari to meet with John Smith. It was a fruitful meeting, if somewhat confusing to Terry, given the company and its penchant for going into long, baffling conversations about monsters and magic. That being said, Terry was surprised and slightly alarmed to find that, once the conversation got going, she actually understood more than she expected to. The topic of monsters and magic was starting to make eerie sense to her. She gathered that, while John couldn't lead them to the Crow Mother directly, he suggested it may be possible to commune with her through dreams. The Crow Mother was known to dreamwalk, and Kaari and Terry had some experience. While Terry and Kaari were alone, Kaari mentioned that she planned to go to Canada, Montreal, with her dogman Aa'tiami to hunt cannibals. Aa'tiami was growing restless, and Kaari worried that he'd become unhappy and fight her if he wasn't allowed to hunt humans. Terry disapproved greatly, and told Kaari hunting humans, any humans, for sport wasn't a thing any of them should be doing, least of all a representative of Monroe like Kaari. The conversation turned into an argument with no conclusion, and which would cause a rift between them.
  • E'rami made a surprise visit to Monroe, and Terry went just outside of town to meet him. Using the corpse of one of the dead dogmen, E'rami told Terry he could feel the Millers moving and gathering their forces - it would only be a matter of time before they, too, would head out to search for the great weapon. Terry assured E'rami that they'd be leaving for Canada soon too, and would get to the weapon before the Millers or anyone else. E'rami intended to task her and Kaari with killing the Millers before they could unite and grow too strong again, and as a way to prove they could take on the man in red when the time comes. In return, he offered them information. Terry accepted.
  • Between trying to minister a town, dealing with the lack of resources for the vital Canada trip, giant monsters and Miller missions, and her troubles with her council, Terry was stressed to say the least. Max had previously urged her to go see the new therapist Terry had hired for the community center, but she had rejected the idea, believing her stressors wouldn't get fixed simply by talking about them. In reality, she was worried what the therapist might ask of personal questions - recounting her past to Gerald had been a really difficult thing for her to do, and she trusted him implicitly. Opening up to a stranger seemed completely impossible. What if he didn't keep it confidential? What if others found out about her past, and what kind of person she really was? Because of Terry's unwillingness, Max came up with what she decided was the 'next best thing' - edibles. Though reluctant at first, Terry and Max eventually had a grand ol' time drinking and eating weed-infused cookies, and the following day, Gerald found the minister outside the walls of Monroe, giggling like an idiot and stoned out of her mind. He coaxed her inside discreetly, and he and Alfred managed to succesfully keep the whole affair under wraps. Afterwards, a very embarassed Terry decided that drugs probably weren't for her.
  • The rift between Terry and Kaari grew as Terry once again tried to convince Kaari not to let Aa'tiami hunt humankind. It turned into a discussion on leadership - Terry asserted herself as leader of Monroe and doubled down on her unwillingness to negotiate her stance, and Kaari told Terry that she trusted her as a friend, but didn't see her as a leader. Terry's fears came true when Kaari declared she would leave Monroe once the Man in Red had been defeated. Terry saw another member of her council, and another trusted friend, slipping away from her.
  • Gerald arrived to the Resident Service Building to find a dejected Terry, who soon told him the reason for her gloom. He listened, sympathetic, and placed some of the blame on himself, saying that he knew or at least suspected that Kaari wasn't really the Monroe council type, and that he made her apply for the position of Head of Medicine mostly to keep her around. Terry shared in his blame, admitting that she was guilty of wanting to keep Kaari around as well. She told Gerald of their plan to meet the Crow Mother in another dreamwalk, knowing full well that Gerald would be less than thrilled. As expected, he didn't like the idea at all, but he didn't try to convince her not to go through with it - rather, when she requested his guidance and support in how to do it better than last time, he offered it readily. Sharing a bottle of wine and acknowledging the mess that was the whole Man in Red situation, Terry was grateful to share her frustrations and worries with the former reverend and, while still facing an uncertain future and the mounting pressure of her ministership, felt her burden lessened as a result. However, though Gerald reassured her he wasn't planning on leaving with Kaari, Terry wasn't convinced, noting how Kaari was obviously more than just a job to him.
The crevice, part 3
  • The day of the planned dreamwalk had arrived. The plan was for Kaari to bring Terry and Alfred along, with Gerald standing watch just outside the ritual cave. As usual, things did not go as planned - Kaari managed to bring Terry along, but Alfred was inexplicably left behind this time. The dreamwalk itself was brief. Terry and Kaari found a Crow woman, who - upon hearing their request to see the Crow Mother - told them to go back to Monroe, and that the Crow would find them. At the same time, Kaari felt a dangerous presence approach, and told Terry she 'had been found faster than last time'. She attempted to wake them both from the dream, but only succeeded in waking Terry, who discovered an anxious Alfred and a convulsing Kaari being watched over by Jenny. Terry quickly made it to Kaari's side along with Gerald, who had been stuck in the cave tunnel but had freed himself. To both their relief, Kaari emerged from her seizure and seemed to be okay. But their relief was cut short when a pool of strange goo formed around Kaari, and she suddenly sprouted two giant snakes from her back. Kaari was strangely okay with that, calmly greeting her offspring, while Terry, Alfred and Gerald were beyond horrified. When the initial panic eventually settled, Gerald furiously accused Terry of causing Kaari's predicament, as well as being a danger to her overall.
  • In the aftermath of the cave incident, Terry hardly showed up around Monroe. Her failures as a Minister, perceived or otherwise, were already causing her to question everything about herself and her ministership. The cave incident, and Gerald's subsequent outburst, had served to confirm her fears in the worst way. As a result, she shut herself inside her room at the Resident Service building, visiting no one and leaving only when absolutely necessary. Kaari - and her snakes - paid Terry a visit, and Kaari expressed her confusion about the situation, and why Gerald was so angry with her. While Terry couldn't be convinced to retract her self-doubt, she did accept Kaari's thanks for going into the Dreaming together - though both acknowledging that Kaari would be going it alone from now on.
Saratoga Springs
  • Terry wasn't able to stay withdrawn for long. Aiden's trip to to the old Miller base was soon be underway - volunteers had been rounded up and, having been tasked by E'rami to take out the remaining Millers, both Terry and Kaari would be coming along as well, with Terry leading the mission.
  • Upon arriving at their destination in Vermont - a foresty area filled with a noxious fog - Kaari detected the presence of large monsters. After hearing an ear-splitting cry, Terry ordered the group back, only to find their car completely destroyed. With their only way of escape gone, the group had no choice but to soldier on through the fog and find shelter in the monster-filled forest. Using Aiden's map, they planned a route, but stumbled upon a couple of corpses. Finding a radio on one of the bodies, Terry called up the strangers on the other end. A man answered and told Terry him and his people had been attacked by Millers, and that they were currently holed up in a building while the Millers were taking potshots at them. Terry and her group made it up to the building and succesfully took out the attacking Millers. Once inside, she met John, a 'cowboy' sort of type, whom she had spoken with over the radio, and who was able to offer more information on where the Miller camps were located. He also offered Terry and her people a ride to the safety of their settlement - Saratoga Springs. Before leaving, Terry found Aiden inspecting the rooms of the placed - the Miller outpost now turned Ranger station - which turned out to be where he and Kaari had been held by the Millers. He told Terry he hadn't found what he was looking for, but that he didn't believe he ever would. A small, if meager, sort of closure.
  • Terry and co. arrived at Saratoga, and found it to be a settlement in many ways similar to Monroe. Not the largest but definitely not the smallest either, with its own functioning community and bustle of life. The group was lead to the local clinic and checked for infection, specifically an infection they had named Spore Lung, a disease contracted from the poisonous fogs. Once cleared, Terry and Kaari met Dr. Logan Klar, who was fascinated with studying the virus and the idea of 'evolutions' towards which he had done some (questionable) research of his own. He asked Terry and Kaari to speak on his behalf at their upcoming meeting with Dakota Hill, the co-leader of town. In return he offered them spore samples of his work for Kaari to study.
  • Meeting with Dakota Hill, she and Terry found common ground in wanting to protect both their respective communities against the Miller threat. Dakota was very receptive and surprised towards Terry and Kaari's offer to help get rid of the Millers in the area, and Terry shared what info she was carrying on the Millers, notably the photographs from the Miller HQ fight showing them turning into monsters and melting. Along with learning about the Man in Red, this was news to Dakota - but she seemed to believe them and, in the end, they all agreed to stay in touch and plan how to best to end the Miller threat once and for all, together. Before leaving, Terry and Kaari learned of another fanatical religious group in the area, similar to the Millers but not the same, abducting people and leaving strange symbols around. Terry offered to help find out more about them too, and promised to be vigilant.
  • Safely back in Monroe, Terry holed up in the Resident Service building again, returning to doing her work from inside and going out as little as possible. She did however make a visit to the Outpost, where meeting Rhea as well as Max provided her the opportunity to apologize in person for backing out of her promise to help Rhea take her club back. Rhea was surprisingly forgiving, noting somewhat sharply that politics aren't politics without a bit of 'pizzaz and dishonesty'. Changing the subject, Max told both how she and her team were finally able to successfully rescue Head Councilor Korshunov, and that he in turn had offered her a promotion. Max revealed how the Councilor apparently intended to promote her to general as thanks, something that didn't sit well with her at all. Worse, he wanted her to be the outward face of the Coalition and their war against Brighton, as well as the main representative of the Pittsford Liberty district in an effort to end the civil war, and for Max write a speech to read in front of everyone. Rhea told Max Korshunov only wanted to use her and that she should have refused him outright, but Max countered regretfully, claiming the stress and pressure made it impossible to refuse. Additionally, she was enticed by Korshunov's promise to pardon Rhea, should she accept. Max commented that she was grateful they'd soon be going to Canada, which would get her away from all the political intrigue and put a wrench in Korshunov's plans. Their meeting was then interrupted by an angry Dwayne Clancy breaking into Max's apartment and the ensuing fight between them. Terry was whisked out of the Outpost by her Peacekeeper protectors.
  • Max and Terry reconvened in Terry's kitchen a day or so later, and Max apologized for Clancy's interruption and their subsequent fight. Max confided in Terry her units distrust of Rhea and their desire to tell the CPF of their plan to go to Canada, hoping that the CPF would be supportive and offer extra resources. Terry was shocked and desperately urged Max to not tell the CPF anything. She told Max that the CPF couldn't be trusted not to want to use the weapon themselves, and even if they could be trusted, they were still known to have been infiltrated by Brighton, who definitely couldn't know about the plan at all costs. Terry tried to convince Max to cut ties with the CPF instead so as not to jeopardize the Canada mission. Max was attentive, but told Terry she couldn't just not listen to her unit, and that they were going to have a meeting about it soon. But, in that same conversation, Max laid bare her own doubts and fears, both in the future and in herself. She told Terry she felt like a failure all around, with everything going wrong no matter what choices she made. Terry disagreed, earnestly telling Max that she was very needed, no less by Terry herself as her friend. She recounted how Max had been a friend and support to her, even when Terry failed to be the same. Terry also let Max know about her and her teams discoveries in Saratoga.

"The Long Dark (part 2)"

The assault on Mr. Wilson
  • Gerald paid Terry a visit where he apologized for his outburst during the snake-incident with Kaari. Reluctant and remorseful, Terry refused to accept his apology, not out of anger but because she felt the blame did belong with her, not just for her failings in that instance, but for her failings throughout her ministership. Gerald commented that he couldn't change her guilt, but that it would eventually weigh her down if she continued to hold on to it. Their conversation was cut short when Alfred suffered a serious coughing fit in the other room. Terry and Gerald helped him to the clinic where Kaari gave her verdict - his years of smoking had saddled him with Stage 2 or 3 COPD, which would soon kill him if he didn't make some immediate lifestyle changes. Alfred begrudgingly agreed to stop smoking.
  • In the time that followed, Terry was in talks with Jinichi Tateru, leader of the Refuge, regarding having an arm prosthetic made by him. She also met a few times with Texas and Max on separate occasions. Texas made mention that he was finding out how to get his missing arm back, though his explanation was vague and Terry didn't push the subject. Max, whom Terry had learned had taken Rhea for her lover, confided in Terry that they were having relationship problems, and that Rhea likely would not be coming to Canada on account of her unit's distrust of her. All the while, Terry continued to wait for the promised arrival of the Crows, while her depression grew deeper and her mood deteriorated, leaving her uncharacteristically morose and ill-tempered.
  • Meeting Kaari in her lab, Terry got a closer look at Kaari's new snakes. Kaari revealed that she was working on a way to re-grow limbs, specifically geared towards re-growing Texas' lost arm. Terry was shocked and deeply questioned the potential ramifications, telling Kaari that she had no idea how that might affect him. Kaari explained to Terry that not just Texas but all the world were going to change very soon anyway, and there was no use fighting it. In researching the fog samples from Vermont she had discovered that the Oculorubrus virus was no longer restricted to human and animal hosts, but was infecting plants as well. The fogs, she had found out, were pollen filled with the virus. As an example of the coming changes, Kaari made a cut in her own flesh, showing Terry that her blood had turned blue. She let Terry know that she fully intended to carry on her experiments, while Terry remained determined to find a way to stop the changes.
  • During a conversation with Kaari, Gerald and Alfred on the subject of the dogmen and the concept of ownership, the group was interrupted when Peacekeeper Edwards came to report an incident to Terry. Coleman had asked Edwards to let Terry know that Anthony Wilson had been attacked in his home. Shocked, Terry hurried to his house with the others following close behind.
  • Terry soon learned that two people had assaulted Anthony Wilson, knocking him down and stealing several documents from his home, including documentation on key Monrovians. During an investigation, a strange device was found as well as strange markings on a couple of houses that seemed to indicate the places were targeted. But why, and by whom? Terry also learned that whoever had broken in had used the names of dead people as aliases to get through the gates, including her deceased young friend Jack Summers.
  • Knowing that Terry and Gerald were among those whose documents has been stolen, and fearing they might be targeted as well, Coleman assigned Peacekeeper bodyguards to each of them as a precaution. Gerald was assigned Melissa Nelson, and Marcus Baczek would serve as Terry's new personal guard. Alfred, still coming to terms with his deteriorating health, was not thrilled about getting replaced.
The brain stem
  • During a visit to the Outpost, Terry was pulled aside by Rhea with a proposition. The former club owner and gang leader told Terry she had information about a friend of Terry's being in danger, information she was willing to share provided Terry agreed to help her take back her club. Through some needling, Terry found out that the friend in question was Liliana, whose cover had been blown. It was just a matter of time before Brighton would find her and very likely kill her. Rhea promised to provide more information once Terry had helped her and the club was hers once again. Terry was torn - she had backed out of the mission in the first place with good reason, and she would be endangering herself AND Monroe if she accepted. If captured by the CPF, Monroe would be seen as having taken the ICLF's side in the ongoing conflict between them and the Coalition, and would no longer be neutral while being dangerously weak against any retaliation. But, fearing for Liliana's life and with the small possibility of learning more about the Brighton threat, despite her better judgement, Terry accepted.
  • Despite the danger and a surprise monster incident, the mission was a success. Terry, in disguise, provided her bit of help to allow Rhea to take back the club and managed to stay anonymous throughout. Rhea was injured at the beginning of the fight and taken to the local clinic, where Max, Terry, Baczek and Peacekeeper Gomez went the next day to meet up with her. At this point in time, Terry's stress was really starting to show. Short-fused and tense, she reminded Rhea that her part of their deal was over, and she was expecting the information she had been promised. But, rather than provide the promised information, Rhea handed Terry an envelope of money and told her to see a woman mysteriously monickered as 'The Prophet'. Rhea reassured Terry that the woman would have what Terry was asking for. Terry was less than thrilled at still being short the info she was promised. The tone turned sour between Terry and Rhea - Rhea 'reminded' Terry to be careful whom she showed distrust, a thinly veiled threat. Terry, fed up, reminded her in turn that the two of them were conducting business, and so far Rhea was the one failing to uphold her part of the deal. Rhea sent Terry off angrily, telling Max not to bring her around again 'if she valued her'.
  • Knowing the area better than any of them, and graciously agreeing to help keep Terry safe, Max followed Terry and her Peacekeepers to the Hannachi Apartment Complex, a place Max knew well. On their way inside they were stopped by two brutes demanding payment for letting them enter. While a still irritated Terry agreed to pay and be on their way, Max put up a hard front and refused, telling the group to fuck off. Terry hissed at Max to shut up, while the two brutes raised their price. Max continued to agitate the brutes, eventually causing Terry to walk off. As Max followed with, she flipped off the two, which set them off and caused them to attack. Terry and her Peacekeepers managed to restrain Max, break the fight up and send the brutes running...with Max's wallet. The danger passed, Terry, furious, had Baczek release Max and told her she wasn't going to need her help anymore. Max walked off, with Terry and the Peacekeepers continuing further into the complex.
  • In a seedy drug-den of an apartment, Terry finally met with the mysterious Prophet who introduced herself as Eva. She was a french-speaking exotic woman surrounding by people in various states of getting high, as well as and an array of what appeared to be foreign drugs, weird creatures and monster parts. Terry delivered the envelope to her and, payment given, the Prophet promised to 'show' Terry what she needed to know in return. When inquiring what she meant by 'show', the Prophet took a brain stem from the table, offering it to Terry and bidding her to eat it. Terry, understandably suspicious, asked Prophet what it would do. The Prophet responded, vaguely, that it would 'help her see things clearer'. Despite the protests of both Baczek and Gomez, with Baczek going as far as trying to grab the stem out of her hand, Terry was quicker and swallowed it.
  • The Prophet, after swallowing a brain stem of her own, took Terry's hand with the intent of guiding her through the experience. Terry's mind was soon lost to the effect of the brain stem - she zoomed through visions that took her to looking through the eyes of her friends in real life. Kaari in her lab. Max in front of Rhea. Terry started to take control of the vision and managed to find Liliana. After seeing a short vision of Liliana's modest hideout, the Prophet guided Terry on to a woman named Cara Adams, the person who used Jack Summers as her alias for entering Monroe. Before finding her, Terry was briefly distracted by Jack's name and witnessed the capture of a red eye through its eyes.
  • Terry was then suddenly looking through Cara's eyes, where she bore witness to a conversation between her, a man named Asher, and a young man she knew from Monroe - Zachary, a citizen. Through the conversation, Terry learned that both Cara and Asher are suffering from spore lung. Zachary was betraying Monroe, helping the two in a plot to set off a bomb in a civilian area, with delusions of being a hero. Terry could feel Cara was disgusted by him, and in truth by their plan, but she was driven to help all the same for some promise of a cure to their disease. The group also mentioned their plan to find, interrogate and kill Liliana. Digging through Cara's memories, Terry learned that the woman had some connection to Crystal and Brighton, with a glimpse of the time Cara learned she was diseased, and assigned to 'missions on the surface' as a result - forced to leave the enclosed facility she used to live in with her family.
  • Terry ended her connection to Cara by trying to send her a mental message - telling her not to go through with the plan and urging her to seek out Monroe for a cure. As the vision started to end, Terry was determined to warn Liliana as well, and kept going, trying once more to find her. She succeeded, and sent a message telling Liliana to find her in Monroe.
  • As the vision finally came to an end, Terry woke up to discover she had been comatose for four hours. Baczek and Gomez had been held back by The Prophet and her people who had refused to let them leave or seek medical aid. Head pounding and in a haze, Terry was brought back to Monroe by the two peacekeepers and taken to the clinic to be examined by Kaari. Kaari provided an uncertain diagnosis, saying Terry might have contracted a brain disease or brain damage, and told them that further examination was required. Terry was admitted to the clinic overnight for observation.
  • The next day, the haze had lifted from Terry's mind. However, she suffered a headache still and had developed a nasty cough. She called in her council to the clinic, to relay what she had discovered. Preston Hand and Thorn were absent, but Liliana had made her way to Monroe and was present for the impromptu debriefing. Kaari told Terry and the others her latest update on the tests she had performed on Terry - Terry was infected with a very high concentration of Oculorubrus virus, which was potentially turning her into a red eye. Terry postponed this worry in favor of more pressing concerns. Zachary the traitor had to be taken care of, and Liliana and Gerald volunteered for the task. When Terry asked for clarification on what 'taking care of' entailed, Gerald retorted, saying Terry herself hadn't been very transparent about going to Pittsford and getting herself very badly infected. Frustrated, Terry told Gerald that, while she always sought to keep her council informed, Monroe's safety was her first priority (conveniently leaving out that she had originally gone to Pittsford to save Liliana), and that as the Minister, she would sometimes have to do things outside of the councils knowledge. She ended by strongly insinuating to Gerald that he could have chosen the Minister post, but chose to run to the Refuge instead, and so had no right to complain about their different positions.
Mindreader
  • In the time that followed, Terry's health got worse. As she continued being plagued by headaches, Kaari monitored her condition and assessed that Terry likely suffered a brain aneurysm. She warned Terry that too much stress could make it burst and kill her. This motivated Terry to re-evaluate the increasingly tense and downcast disposition she'd developed and work towards adopting a calmer outlook.
  • Even while taking all precautions, Terry's condition was troublesome. In the months that followed, Terry's headaches would interfere with her work as Minister, and her coughing gradually worsened as well. She feared turning, feared appearing weak, and feared the people of Monroe suspecting what her disease was about. She had to postpone receiving her metal prosthetic arm as the medic Nye Warner, who was going to attach it, didn't feel it safe to do as long as she was sick. However, it was also during this time she got closer to her bodyguard Baczek, who took up residence in the Resident Services building and didn't leave her side if he could help it.
  • Terry finally got a chance to meet the Crow Mother when a pair of her Crows took contact as promised. She, Kaari and Max were lead to the secret Crow camp where the Crow Mother and her council were waiting for them. They discussed the threat of The Man in Red, the mission to Canada, and the marks. The Crow Mother agreed to have some of her people help them on the mission, but could not help with Max's mark, nor with Terry's disease. While the Crow Mother was powerful - a 'progenitor' as Terry would later learn - and possessed a powerful version of the Oculorubrus virus, she feared that any attempt she would make to erase another mark would end in the death of the markee.
  • Back in Monroe, another startling side-effect of Terry's illness began to show. At first, whenever her migraines worsened, she swore she could detect whispering voices just at the edge of hearing. At the same time, she could often swear she was detecting emotions beyond recognizing a persons tone of voice or facial expression. Worried but unable to do anything about it, she tried not to dwell on it and told herself it was likely the side-effects of whatever damage she had sustained, while hoping it would disappear in time. But it didn't disappear. One evening, talking with Texas, she suddenly found herself stealing into his mind, experiencing one of his memories through his eyes, not unlike her experience with Cara during the brain stem trip. Shocked and confused, she didn't reveal anything to Texas yet, fearing how he might react. But over the course of several weeks she found herself inadvertently reading not just him, but the minds of Nika Nachtnebel, Kaari, Alfred, Baczek, Max and Kaari as well. Eventually she would tell all but Nika what she had done.
  • Reading Baczek's mind, Terry discovered the depths of his feelings for her. She revealed to him what she had seen, and admitted she had feelings for him as well. As a result the two of them initiated a secret romantic relationship.
The stone
  • On a rainy night, Anthony Wilson paid a visit to Terry at the Resident Service building. He brought with him a strange rock, and a stranger story. An hour earlier, a woman in a cloak approached Anthony while he was out for a walk. They spoke for a while about Monroe, about his wife, and other things. When he asked her why she was there, she gave the little, red glowing stone to him, asking him to give it to Terry. It was only then Anthony recognized her - Katherine Fitzgerald, who was killed a long time ago. Anthony attempted to follow the dead woman then, but she had vanished. Terry listened to Anthony's story and looked more closely at the stone, feeling apprehensive. She had a feeling she had seen it before, and finally realized it was the same type of stone she had seen during the dark ritual performed by the Miller cult, back at the Miller HQ raid. Before she could examine the stone further, Kaari entered through the kitchen window, looking decked out for a fight and very on edge. She told the two that she had detected a monster presence, which turned out to be coming from the stone. Terry suspected a trap, refrained from touching it, and pondered if it could be destroyed. As they continued talking, Terry started hearing whispers from the stone, picking up in intensity and causing her head to hurt worse, until she suddenly lost consciousness.
  • Terry's next experience was surreal. She woke up in an apartment bedroom with a television set and a spinning ceiling fan. As she began to explore, she didn't recognize the apartment itself, but many of its knickknacks, books and pictures were items from her real life. Through a peeking hole into the hallway she saw Max and Rhea talking about where to go eat dinner but, though Terry tried to call out to them, they didn't seem to hear her at all. Terry then started hearing another voice calling from somewhere. Soon after, the television sets in the living room and bedroom turned on to show real time camera footage of the rooms. A creature, invisible save for a shadow on the television screens, started chasing her. Terry armed herself with a knife from the kitchen, narrowly fought the creature off, and managed to escape to the bathroom, where she discovered a giant hole in the wall. Crawling through the hole, she followed the sound of the calling voice as she got gradually closer to it. She found herself in a big plaza and ran into a young, British man wearing a military uniform. He introduced himself as John MacMillan and, while he seemed equally surprised to see her, he assured her that she would return to her own world. They exchanged questions and answers for a while - John seemed puzzled and unknowing about both the stone and how Terry ended up in the apartment. John told Terry she was the first person he had seen in a while, and that people usually came and went very quickly, with most of them failing to escape the place and eventually killing themselves. Before she could ask any more questions, Terry felt a sharp pain in her head. Feeling herself fading, Terry asked John one last question - "Are you dead?" - but never heard the answer.
  • Terry woke up in the Resident Service building hallway, in the arms of Baczek. She wriggled free and found Kaari unconscious and injured on the kitchen floor, her snakes wrapping protectively around her. Through her attempts at releasing Terry from whatever hold the stone had over her, it had exploded, covering the kitchen with its pieces and taking Kaari's hand with it. Anthony was nowhere to be seen, but Nurse Joy, Gerald and Alfred had all arrived while Terry was out. Kaari awoke with a triumphant yell, proud that she had won her battle with the stone. Terry, shocked from the experience, broke down crying. She and Kaari were both admitted to the clinic - Kaari to have her stump treated, and Terry for observation. However, Terry got no sleep that night - she had another nightmare about the same apartment and forced herself awake. Initially returning to her offices the next day, Terry's health continued to deteriorate, and a few hours later she was re-admitted.
  • To her horror, Terry discovered that she would return to the same nightmare every time she went to sleep. Prolonged sleep meant trying to fight or escape the monster - it would chase her, toy with her and, if it caught her, it would hurt her. Any injury she sustained in the nightmare applied to her real life self as well, and Baczek watched marks and scars mysteriously appear on her while she lay in bed. In the beginning, Terry spent as little time asleep as possible to avoid the nightmare, but this was a temporary solution at best. With hardly any restitution, Terry's health went into a sharp decline. The symptoms of her Oculorubrus infection got progressively worse, and Terry feared it would soon claim her life. She spent her waking hours keeping a journal of her discoveries in the nightmare apartment and planning her strategies for escaping the monster, as well as chronicling her search for John MacMillan, the person she prayed held the answer to her permanent escape. However, as much as she tried to escape the apartment, she was woefully unable to return to the plaza as the monster kept her trapped.
Coma
  • After weeks at the clinic, Terry had made precious little progress and her condition had gotten ever worse. She suffered a fever, relied on supplemental oxygen to breathe, and her eyes had reddened enough that she could pass for a red eye. Kaari, returned to her work at the clinic and working day and night on a cure for Terry's illness, proposed putting Terry in a medically induced coma to halt the progression of the infection and buy time. This, of course, bore the risk of Terry being stuck in the nightmare, unable to escape by waking up. Feeling out of options and sicker than ever, Terry accepted, pondering that this could be her chance of finally find John again with a prolonged attempt.
  • Terry parted with Baczek, Alfred, Max and Texas. Shortly before going under she called in Gerald, who had already been acting as temporary Minister while Terry was stuck at the clinic. Terry gave him her journal which included her instructions for running Monroe in her absence. Gerald in turn asked Terry the grim but practical question of whether she had any wishes for her funeral, in case she didn't return. Terry reassured him, adamantly stating that she did not plan on dying.

Memorable Quotes[]

"...Do you believe in karma?"
Terry Winters to Corey Jackson.
"It's obstacles. That's all it is, that's what it boils down to. My job is to find a way to get past them long enough to reach those goalposts. It's something I can wrap my head around. Not monsters or spirits, Brighton agents, Millers or Crystals, radio talks, speeches, red eyes, campaign funds, meetings and making relations. There's just today, and tomorrow. And the goalposts."
Terry Winters to Gerald Bechet.
"We have to make decisions all the time. Especially when other people depend on what we decide. And sometimes we decide wrong, and people get hurt. And sometimes we decide right, and people still get hurt. A lot of the time-...most of the time, it's impossible to tell which is which."
Terry Winters to Max Rutherford.
"The people who are gone, are gone. And I have a responsibility to keep those who are alive, alive."
Terry Winters to Texas Battle.
"…But what is a monster? In all I’ve encountered – and I’ve encountered a lot, and still it took a long while for me to make this distinction - a monster isn’t appearance. It’s a person who would do monstrous things. Who’d burn the world to remake it in their own, sick, twisted vision. Who’d invite murderers, terrorist, slave-keepers, torturers into our midst, then run with the treasury when things don’t turn out how they want. Who’d work against the voice of the people. Who’d judge others for being who and what they are, not for their actions. The dogman looks like a monster. I don’t like dogmen any more than anyone here. Most…people here. But he has given up the ways of its kind to protect us. E’rami, the creature of the forest, looks like a god of Death, and he smells really terrible too. His appearance is terrifying, but he doesn’t harm the living, and he keeps the red eyes from our door. My eyes don’t make me a monster. Neither does my recovery. Kaari’nai is not a monster. She keeps snakes on her back, both who are intelligent and well-intentioned and have been an amazing help while she saves our lives. They are not monsters. We’re changed. Our work has changed us, the world has changed us. But we’ve done nothing monstrous to you. We’re not going to. We’re not monsters. (...) We need to stop this mindset that all things strange are bad, one that I too subscribed to when I took the Minister post, and judge these creatures for what they do – not what they are. It’s the only way we’ll survive. It’s the only way to learn how to beat back the true monsters."
Terry Winters adressing the people of Monroe.

Trivia[]

  • Terry goes by her nickname almost exclusively. The only instances she has used the name Theresa have been in an official context. How she feels about her real name is unknown.
  • Terry is 160 cm/5'2 ft. tall.
  • Terry is a bookworm, preferring books on ancient history and biology. When she was younger, and before the apocalypse hit, she aspired to be a writer and/or a teacher.
  • Terry was born right-handed. After losing three fingers on her right hand to frostbite, she spent the next several months practicing writing with her left hand. She's able to write fully legibly again, but her handwriting is far from pretty.
  • Terry's beverage of choice is tea, preferably thistle or nettle. Not just for the taste - she likes the idea that something prickly and unpleasant can turn into something warm, comforting and helpful.
  • Despite being fairly skilled at wielding a pistol, Terry has a deep dislike for guns.
  • After eating a dogman brain stem, Terry acquired the ability to read minds. It also worsened and changed Terry's dormant oculorubrus infection, making her very ill. Following a psychic kidnapping and coma worsening her condition, Terry was given a 'cure' designed by Kaari to keep the virus in check. Built upon samples and studies of different progenitors, it effectively turned Terry into a progenitor as well.
